Happy Birthday Mike!


Mike was born in 1940 on this day 2 May.  One year ago on this same date, he was informed of his bladder cancer and so began our new journey and education about the process and challenges.  We are still here to tell the tale!

This year we celebrated this auspicious event with friends who brought music and mirth for our eve.  

Assembling in the living room, not the plastic bags of bags

NOTE: For all visitors to our home, we announce our interest in recycling plastic.  Those plastic bags at the side of Mike's chair are part of the story.  Ridwell is an emerging company sourcing places to recycle every type of plastic.  For those not in their pick-up zone, we can purchase the intro box, with collection bags for 2 types of plastic to gather and mail, supporting the USPS, to a near collection zone where they will direct the specific plastic bags to their fully recycled future.  If we can get more Santa Barbara takers, we may become part of thier collection area soon!  Regardless, I am in favor of getting the start and supporting this amazing project.  Check it out and order your starter kit.


David and Guy said the acoustics of our living room were excellent!

Dave Stone and Guy brown, who joined with their spouses, were able to share amazing duets with violin,  guitar, and song.  We enjoyed remarkable spirited versions of the Rolling Stones and others of that memorable era.   They even included Happy Birthday of the Beatles before we sat down for a simple repast.  

As we were regaled with the lively music, we were also informed about Allbirds, a shoe that evidently we all must have... 

I had not heard of them but now know something of them ....

Several colors were in evidence by -- I suppose -- happy walkers!.

Cheery conversations took place as we enjoyed Condor's Hope Shiraz, which our visiting scholar at UCSB, Roozbeh Zamanian from Shiraz, said was excellent.  




After a delicious cake from Renaud's we relaxed to a finale that included one of my favorites Route 66!

Fun was had by all.

The Background....   Mike was diagnosed with bladder cancer on his birthday, May 2nd of last year. We had been planning a camping trip in our wonderful VW Vanagon and had got it all ready to go when this news came. This certainly changed our plans.  There were 2 surgeries in anticipation of 8.5 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy that initiated in September and completed in mid-October. Overlapping the treatments were trips to ER and most initiated hospitalizations. On one occasion, he was in ICU for 4 days. This was rough.  There had been more ER and hospitalizations than months since his treatments. The infections and sepsis, bleeding bladder all have made us frequent visitors to ER, familiar with the team there and on the hospital floor. Both Mike and I are grateful to the staff and have been reassured that we are not abusing the system.  Most recently, Mike was in for a major infection for 5 days, and we got out for only a week and a half. Mike is getting visitors!

  Mike is getting visitors!  And he is enjoying the conversations and the change from the daily effort of getting well!  Short walks, loads of water, and rest. Rob and Allison shared lunch last Thursday, and they talked of art and Santa Cruz Island. Today, Michael and Phillip spent time with subjects all over the place...  Sunburst Farms (remember?), Dia de Sta Cruz (need to pay for that), and yes, we slipped a little into that subject that need not be named! Mike with Michael, Phillip, and Kitty who was making herself a nuisance!
